Fly Fishing School

The best and quickest way to learn how to fly fish, is to enroll in a course taught by a professional in the sport.

Fortunately, these courses are not difficult to find, but deciding which one will provide the most valuable information can be daunting.

Most range in price from free to $1,000 or more. The best courses probably fall somewhere in the middle.

The internet is a great way to locate good fly fishing instruction.

You can also find free circulation newspapers and magazines such as Fly Fish America, Adirondack Sport & Fitness, and Mid Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide. These, and other publications can be found at your local Fly Fishing Shop as well as flyers about upcoming lessons.

Another easy way to go is to call your local shop and ask when the courses are, how much they cost, what equipment if any you will need, what food preparations will be made, how long it is, and what lodging accommodations will be provided for multi-day courses. Most importantly, keep your eyes and ears open.

Talk to the shop owner and your fellow fly fishermen, and you'll acquire a general sense of who’s who and what’s what when it comes to fly fishing schools.

Fly fishing schools are a great place to take your first steps into the waters of fly fishing. Both beginner fly fishing enthusiasts, and expert anglers alike can learn a river's worth of knowledge at a quality fly fishing school.

In less than an hour, you can have the basic skills necessary to land your first fish on a fly fishing lure.

Make sure the class is relatively small to insure more one-on-one instruction. Ask the instructor how many years he's been fishing, and where they've been.

A good school will also have loaner gear that you can use. So don't waste your time and money buying gear until you've had a chance to feel out some of the school's equipment first.

A quality school will cover all the basics:
  • Casting techniques
  • Essential knots
  • Choosing gear
  • Selecting tackle
  • Stream entomology
  • Proper fly selection
  • How to read water
  • How to play, land, and safely release fish
So, listen carefully, practice as often as possible, and above all have fun!
