Fly Fishing Types

Basically, there are two main fly fishing types: saltwater fly fishing, and freshwater fly fishing. While freshwater fly fishing is usually the most common, there are more and more people seeking out saltwater locales to test their mettle. Trout, steelhead, and bluegill are just a few types of freshwater fish you'll find. Striper and bass are common among saltwater regions of the US.

With freshwater fly fishing, the standard rod, reel, and line are suitable for virtually any river, lake or pond. With saltwater fly fishing, however, a shorter rod is used to provide more strength and better leverage. An alloy or graphite reel is used to prevent corrosion, and a weight-forward line is much more effective in saltwater than in freshwater.
