Bass Fly Fishing
Black bass are the most popular game as far as bass fly fishing is concerned. They're aggressive, hardy, and spend a lot of time near the surface of the water. This makes them prime targets for fly fisherman.
Bass are not native west of the Rocky Mountains, however, both Large and Small Mouth Bass have adapted well to the Pacific Northwest climate. In Oregon, Large Mouth Bass are plentiful throughout the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, and can also be found in Rock Creek and Pine Hollow Reservoirs. Mid-April is good for Large Mouth Bass at Barnes Butte Lake near Prineville.
Small Mouth Bass are also plentiful in Oregon. The John Day and South Umpqua Rivers are well known for their Small Mouth Bass. These fish love crayfish, so a sinking line fished slow and deep does best. Small Mouth Bass also feed on a variety of nymphs and bait fish. For this, try casing cork body poppers and sliders to grassy banks and rock out crops.
